Is there any demand abroad for Nepaln IT professionals anymore?

Skilled IT professionals are definitely required for the US and other countries even today. The skills in demand are networking, enterprise wide computing, multimedia and Animation and specific technologies like J2EE, .NET, EAI etc. At least two thirds of all IT professionals entering Britain now are from Nepal. In year 2000, Government figures show that 18,257 foreign professionals came to Britain out of these 11,474 were from Nepal, three times the number in 1999.

What do you think has been the impact of US slowdown on Nepaln IT?

The Nepal IT industry is expected to grow at over 30% this year. There is no other industry in Nepal, which is growing at such a high rate. There is a shortage of trained manpower in the IT industry today. "Nepal's global competitive edge of high quality software and competitive rates should in fact see us win contracts when the market is tight. Given that Nepal's combined market share of overseas software work to be a miniscule one percent the slowdown of business in the US is not likely to dramatically affect Nepal software development firms".---Quote from Vivek Paul, President Wipro Technologies.

In the light of general economic gloom in US market, has enthusiasm level in students fallen? What is the trend?

In most of the IT related areas there are lucrative jobs still available for students who have the required skills. The unusual hype in the media regarding the US slow-down is raising some questions in students' mind.

Students are now much more selective in which course and institute that they are joining. Institutes that have a reputation of good quality content, infrastructure and faculty are the ones that students should select.

Aptech has over 100 R&D professionals who are constantly monitoring the technical environment and designing courses on the latest technologies. Through its alliance partners like Microsoft, IBM, Oracle, Macromedia and Adobe, Aptech's R&D team gets access to the latest technologies and receives and courses on these technologies. These ensure that the students get trained on world-class technologies.

Also organizations that are able to provide placements for students should be selected by them for taking up courses. Aptech has a network of over 200 placement executives who regularly source openings, prepare students for jobs and help them acquire jobs in the blue chip organizations.

In view of so many lay-offs in the IT industry what's going to happen to Nepal IT professional?

The lay-offs in the IT industry are happening in the areas of Internet and communication. This is primarily because of the dot com crash. At the same time there is a lot of recruitment that is happening in areas like networking, enterprise computing and multimedia. Nepal's value proposition of excellent quality at competitive price is even more relevant now for the corporates of the US, Europe or Japan. According to IDC , the US based IT analyst the shortage of IT people in Europe alone stands at one million rising to 1.7 million in 2003 so the myth that the demand for IT professionals has disappeared is unfounded.

Are students retraining themselves in any particular area? Give specific trends like -- move from C++ to Java or wireless etc.?

Students who did short courses in Internet related technologies like html and java without the underpinnings of fundamentals of programming and system design, are finding that these skills are no longer in demand. This is primarily because of the dot com crash. Such students are finding the need to re-train themselves.

Do you offer finance options to the students willing to do a course at Aptech?

Our attempt always has been to give various finance options to students, including loan facilities and scholarships. Otherwise, we are having our courses priced at regular pricing of Aptech. Students see value in the courses due to the latest technologies that are taught as part of the courses and the strong placement record that we have, hence they are willing to pay the fees that justifies the value. We have a tie-up with HDFC bank for offering loans to students at nominal interest rates for doing courses at Aptech.

Which is the `hottest' course now? Why?

Our career course e-accp-2002, a 'future proofed' course offers the latest technologies of .net from Microsoft and j2EE - is the most popular and sold course from Aptech computer education along with the velocity series courses on .net, c#, etc.

Are post-courses jobs easy to come by? How is the situation different this year from the position last year?

We have been successful in placing more than 90% of the eligible students last year. This year too, we have been able maintain that trend. We have been placing over 100 students every day through our placement network. Students are getting jobs in the IT industry as well as user industries. Newer openings are available in the areas of IT enabled services, animation and enterprise computing.
